DEPRAG Internship | Day 12 - Tuesday, June 18th, 2024

Transcript:

Hello! This is Max. It is Tuesday, June 18, and I just finished Day 12 of my internship at Deprag here in Amberg, Germany. Yesterday, I continued working in the Screwdriver Testing Department, where I tested and troubleshot several electric screwdrivers and examined the graphs of “torque over angle of rotation” produced when these screwdrivers fastened screws. A hard screw joint indicates that the parts fastened together by the screw are stiffer, so achieving the desired torque to fasten the screw requires a smaller angle of rotation. This results in a steeper graph of “torque over angle of rotation.” A soft screw joint indicates that the parts fastened are less stiff, so achieving the desired torque to fasten the screw requires a larger angle of rotation. This results in a gentler slope of torque over angle of rotation. Today in the testing department, I tested several screwdriver attachments and exerted ever more torque upon them until they broke, allowing me to calculate their maximum functional torque. I then went to the Calibration Laboratory, where I calibrated a strain gauge used to measure torque in screwdrivers. A strain gauge consists of rows of metallic foil and is glued inside onto the screwdriver.  As the internal parts of the screwdriver experience torsion due to torque, the metallic foil is stretched, increasing the strain gauge’s electrical resistance. This relationship between torsion and electrical resistance can be used to indirectly measure the torque exerted by the screwdriver. It was exciting to learn about the science behind the torque sensors. See you tomorrow!
